Applications opened this month for the 2027 edition of Strengthening Capacity in Global Health Diplomacy, a twelve-month in-person programme run by the Global Health Centre at the Geneva Graduate Institute. According to the programme page, the course runs from 10 February to 21 October 2027, and the deadline to apply is Sunday, 8 November 2026, at 23:59 CET. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until available places are filled, and applicants will be notified of the outcome by 10 December 2026.

The programme is offered through the International Geneva Global Health Platform with support from the Institute of Philanthropy, and taught by Graduate Institute faculty alongside outside subject experts. It is built from a foundational course of three half-days, short courses of two half-days each, and master classes of two to three hours, organised around five competencies: essential global health knowledge, political analysis and diplomacy, strategic decision-making and leadership, cross-cultural and interpersonal communication, and coalition-building and advocacy.

The 2027 calendar places the foundational course, The New Diplomacy of Global Health, on 10 to 12 February. A master class on geopolitics and global health diplomacy follows on 18 March, then short courses on global health law on 23 and 24 June, negotiation skills on 6 and 7 July, and climate change and global health diplomacy on 14 and 15 September. A closing master class on the global health ecosystem for access to medicines is scheduled for 21 October.

There is no fee to participate. The programme page attributes that to donor support, and states that participants travelling from outside Geneva cover their own travel, accommodation and visa costs. Sessions are held in person at the institute throughout the year and instruction is in English. The programme is designed for global health stakeholders based in Geneva, but applications from outside Switzerland are accepted. A Certificate of Programme Completion requires attendance at the foundational course, at least two short courses and at least one master class.

Applicants submit a motivation statement of no more than 500 words, a curriculum vitae of one to two pages, the name and contact details of one professional reference, and a profile picture with a short biography. According to the selection criteria published with the call, assessors weigh the strength of the motivation statement, at least one relevant work experience in global health or in policy-making processes, regional, organisational and gender diversity, and the applicant’s ability and commitment to attend the full programme in person.

The framing published with the programme situates it in a period of strain for multilateral health cooperation. The call cites shocks to the multilateral system, geopolitical faultlines, technological developments, shifts in power and funding, and calls to decolonise global health, and argues that diplomacy has become more essential to global health as a result. For professionals new to Geneva the stated purpose is practical navigation of the city’s health ecosystem; for experienced practitioners it is updating knowledge and refining skills, with networking presented as a central benefit.

Ummanitarian Perspective

The programme removes one barrier and leaves another standing. Tuition is waived, which matters, but the calendar is twelve months of in-person attendance in Geneva, and the same page that waives the fee assigns travel, accommodation and visa costs to the participant. For a health worker in Jakarta, Manila or Dhaka, the binding constraint is therefore not the price of the course but six separate trips, the months of notice an employer must give, and a Schengen visa file that has to be prepared and approved before February. The published selection criteria value regional diversity; they do not fund the mobility that diversity requires.

That gap is worth naming because it shapes who ends up in the room. Negotiation and coalition-building skills are taught, and access to medicines is on the syllabus, but the professional networks formed in such a programme also determine who is consulted when positions are drafted and who is trusted to carry them into a delegation. A tuition-free course with an unfunded travel requirement is more open than a paid one, and still narrower than its own diversity criteria imply. The practical test for institutions outside Geneva is not whether the course is worth the fee. It is whether a nominated staff member can be released for six blocks in a single year, and whether the visa can be secured in the roughly thirteen weeks between the application deadline and the first session.
